London’s Towering Buildings

London has one of the most spectacular skylines in the world. Its architectural style is diverse, having housed so many structures for many years. Clearly, the buildings in London display a wide range of influences.

Nevertheless, if there is one commonality between the varied structures in the city, it would be the use of brick – yellow stock brick or warm orange-red brick. The bricks are often ornate with carvings and plaster mouldings. Several grand houses and public buildings are built from Portland stone, while others are of white stucco. If you want to spot excellent examples of Victorian architecture, try visiting some of London’s railway terminal like St. Pancras and Paddington.

The London Plan encourages the development of tall buildings. Thus, expect to see new skyscrapers being erected for the next ten years or so, specifically in the City of London and Canary Wharf.
